Play like John Lee Hooker

One song I’ve always wanted to be able to play is Boom Boom Boom by the great John Lee Hooker but I’ve never seen any really good instructions on how to play like him. Here’s a great little video lesson that teaches you how to play a simplified version that sounds great and is relatively easy to play. It’s in standard tuning and is confined to just two strings and two chords you already know, the E and A chords.

One word of warning: this is really fun to play but be careful! I haven’t played my electric in a while and my fingers aren’t used to bending strings. I practiced this for about an hour today and developed a huge blister on the tip of my left middle finger so I’m out of commission for a day or two. If you haven’t developed callouses, remember to practice in short bursts until your fingers toughen up. It’s really easy to lose track of the time and shred your fingertips so make sure you take breaks!

Spanish Fandango lesson

Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve updated this blog but lately I’ve been getting back into playing and I’ve found some great stuff that I want to share.

YouTube is an amazing resource for the novice guitar player. There are literally thousands of short lessons available. Spanish Fandango is a song that was popular in the late 1800s. It’s in Open G and was so popular that Open G became known as Spanish Tuning. If you’ve never played around with open tunings it’s a great place to start because it’s really easy to play. I think the open tunings are great to learn finger picking because you can practice your right hand without fretting with your left and it sounds nice.

Keni Lee Burgess breaks Spanish Fandango in three parts and does a great job of making it easy to digest for the novice player. The hardest part of this song is the picking pattern but you can practice that by playing the first 4 bars over and over.

This is a great first song to learn because its easy yet the finger picking makes it sound complex. Give it a try and upload your own video to YouTube!

Chicchi!

Chicchi is an 8 year old Japanese girl with ridiculous guitar chops. Check out the video of her jamming on Secret Agent Man with Nokie Edwards of The Ventures. I’ve been trying to learn this song myself and seeing a little girl play that well is either really inspirational or really depressing.

My favorite part of the video is Nokie just staring at her like he can’t believe what he’s seeing. Then when it’s his turn to solo he knows he can’t just play it straight so he pulls out a crazy solo.

Apache by The Shadows

I’ve always been a fan of 60’s instrumental surf music and one of the earliest and most influential instrumental acts was The Shadows. Their 1960 hit Apache was one of the first tunes to feature what would become the signature surf sound of dual guitars and lots of reverb. Sometimes referred to as a British version of The Ventures, The Shadows were a great band in their own right.

As cool as Apache sounds it’s actually quite easy to play. That is, the notes are not difficult. Making it sound just like The Shadows might be a bit more difficult. Ultimate Guitar has a number of different versions, this one is probably the easiest but I don’t think it’s 100% accurate.

Hotel Yorba - Great beginner song!

Over at the terrific Lost Melodies blog there’s a great post about the White Stripes and some some of their videos. The highlight is Hotel Yorba, a simple, catchy little song that’s very easy to play. The video has so many closeups of Jack White’s fret hand that it’s practically an instructional video on how to play the song. Any beginning guitar player will immediately recognize our old friends the C, D, and G chords, proof that these simple, basic chords can form the basis for a modern song, albeit with a retro feel.

Guitar Tabs without the hassle

You may have noticed there are tons of sites out there offering guitar tabs.  You may have also noticed that almost all of them are infested with obnoxious pop up ads and in some cases they even try to infect you with adware or trojans.  One of the best things you can do to protect yourself is to switch to the Firefox browser with the Google toolbar.  It has excellent popup blocking built in and doesn’t use ActiveX scripting, which is how the nefarious adware people infect your computer.  You can download Firefox from the link over on the left sidebar.

Here are the sites I like to get my tabs from, they’re trouble free when using Firefox, I can’t vouch for Internet Explorer.

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com - Probably the biggest tab site on the net, they have some pretty good lessons and an active forum.  A lot of the discussion is pretty juvenile however.
http://www.chordie.com/ - A newer site with some hard to find songs and a slightly more mature forum.
http://olga.net/ - The oldest guitar tab site on the net, it started way back in 1992 as an FTP archive.  Unlike the others they only offer one version of each song so you don’t have to wade through multiple versions to find the one that’s most complete. No pop up ads here, a very clean site.

Lost Melodies

The Adams Avenue Roots Music Festival

I’m ashamed to say that even though I’ve lived in San Diego for over five years now I’ve never been to the Adams Avenue Roots Music Festival. That’s finally going to change this weekend when the Festival returns for it’s 33rd year. The festival features tons of great music in traditional styles: folk, blues, swing, country, cowboy, Celtic, Cajun, and much more. Amazingly there’s no admission to attend this wonderful event so there’s not excuse to stay home.

Songs for Beginners - Three Marlenas

Guitar Noise is my favorite site for the novice guitarist.  The excellent beginner lessons simplify some popular songs and walk you step by step through learning to play.  One of the easiest (and best sounding) is Three Marlenas, by The Wallflowers.  A simple three chord structure is given some life with an interesting strumming pattern and some percussive strokes (basically just slapping the guitar).  The three chords are really easy, even for a beginner, and it sounds just like the recording.  The only difficult part for me was learning to integrate the percussive stroke in time and getting it to sound right.

 I’ve found that songs like this are an excellent way to learn chords.  It’s very rewarding to gradually hear the song take shape and it’s more fun than just practicing chord changes.  If you can sing it’s even better, nothing impresses non-musicians like playing something they recognize, no matter how simple the arrangement or sloppy the playing.
