Review: Martin 000X1 Acoustic Guitar
I recently made the decision that it was time to upgrade my guitar. After a year of playing my trusty $79 Rogue 100-D I finally felt justified in purchasing a “real” guitar. I settled on the Martin 000X1, here’s my review.
The Martin X Series combines advanced composite materials in the neck, sides and back along with solid Sitka spruce top and traditional Martin craftsmanship to provide true Martin sound and quality at an entry level price. While there are other solid top guitars for less money, I believe the Martin X series offers outstanding bang for the buck for a guitar novice.
Buying experience
After much research I decided the Martin 000X1 was the one for me but I couldn’t find one at any of the local shops so I was forced to head to Guitar Center. Let me just say that I really don’t like Guitar Center. My previous visits to GC have been on weekends when the store is full of teenage “shredders” who seem to love nothing better than high speed noodling for hours on end. If it’s too loud you’re too old and in my case I must be getting old because each time I’ve been to Guitar Center I leave in less than 5 minutes.
This time I went to Guitar Center on a Tuesday morning and it made a world of difference. I had the acoustic room to myself and the department manager was very helpful. After trying a few other guitars in the $500 price range he unboxed a 000X1 and I immediately fell in love with it. He gave me a $50 discount, didn’t try too hard to upsell me on strings or a case (which I already have) and I was out the door. So the lesson here is try to go to Guitar Center on a weekday to avoid the noodlers and shredders.
Appearance
The 000X1 is a no frills guitar. No fancy rosette, no binding work, no inlays. There’s not even any inlaid fret markers, Martin opted for painted dots along the upper edge of the neck. But don’t mistake plain for unattractive: this is a beautiful guitar with a flawless finish. The frets are absolutely perfect, the neck joint is rock solid and I haven’t been able to spot a single glue blob, discolored spot or anything out of place. The worst thing I can say about the appearance is the Martin sticker inside the body wasn’t glued down tightly. It was slightly curled up but once I pushed it down with a (capped) Sharpie it was fine. If you prefer understated perfection over flashy inlays you’ll love the 000X1.
One unexpected bonus is the guitar smells great. The very light finish (it is NOT unfinished, despite what you may read elsewhere) allows the natural smell of the wood to escape and it really adds to the experience.
The neck is made of Stratabond, a multi-layered plywood product widely used to make gun stocks. It looks great and should prove to be very durable. The sides and back are made of a high pressure laminate that looks just like wood yet should prove to be more stable under changing weather conditions. The solid spruce top is typical Martin perfection, the aforementioned light finish allows the beauty of the wood to shine through.
The overall impression is of a precisely engineered piece of lightweight craftmanship. It feels sturdy yet delicate, light yet solid.
Sound
I’m no expert but to me it sounds great, better than anything I tried in it’s price range. The 000 auditorium size means it has less bass than the dreadnaught style and as a result it’s not quite as loud but the notes ring clear and chords sound wonderful. I lack the musical vocabulary to truly describe it but trust me, it sounds great. I’ll post some sound samples soon.
Playability
The jump from a $79 Rogue to a Martin is truly amazing. It’s like going from a 1984 Dodge to a 2006 Audi. The guitar was set up perfectly out of the box. I know enough to check intonation at the 12th fret and each string was perfectly in tune. The action was low, I feared it would be too low but as long as my left hand technique is good there’s no buzz at all. The neck feels very fast, I’ve noticed a definite increase in my ability to move around the fretboard. The low action means I don’t have to press as hard, leading to a more relaxed left hand and shoulder. A more expensive guitar won’t make you a better player but in my case it definitely makes me sound a little better.
Conclusion
Purchasing the Martin 000X1 is the best decision I ever made. $500 is a small price to pay for something that will last for many years (with a lifetime warranty) of daily use. In fact it’s probably the nicest thing I own and has already reached prized possesion status. If my house catches fire it’s the first thing I’m going back for, and that includes the cats, my computer and my HD TV!

Review: Elixir Strings
I recently saw an ad in a guitar magazine for Elixir strings, they’re giving away a free t-shirt with the purchase of two packs of strings. Since I’m all about the freebies, and I needed new strings anyway, I ran right out an bought a couple of packs from my local guitar shop.
If you’re not familiar with Elixir strings, they’re a bit different from your average guitar strings in that they’re coated with some kind of space age polymer or something. They cost a lot more, I paid $13.50 a pack, as oposed to about 4 or 5 bucks for normal strings. Are they worth the extra money? Well I can report that they make my $79 Rogue RA-100D sound much better. Elixir claims they last a lot longer than uncoated strings so in the long run you’ll actually save money. I just put them on so I’ll have to wait and see on that one. The other benefit is the coating makes slides a little easier and is easier on the fingers overall, so I would definitely recommend them for a beginner.
I previously used D’addarrio strings and was very happy with them. On my last change I went with Martin strings, just to see if I liked them and I was very disappointed. They sounded like crap on my crappy guitar and were very rough on my fingers. I was actually going to change back to D’addarios until I saw that ad so kudos to the Elixir marketing department!
If you have a cheap beginner guitar like me, one of the easiest and cheapest ways to improve the tone is to replace your strings. A pleasant tone is important, even if no one else hears you play, because if you like the way your guitar sounds you’re going to play it more often. Book Review: Beginning Fingerstyle Blues
Beginning Fingerstyle Blues
The book starts with learning a basic alternating bass lineline using the thumb and gradually builds from there. I had tried to learn this previously but for some reason just couldn't get it. Now after just a few hours I can play the bass line quarter notes along with accompanying half or quater notes and I'm working on eighth notes.
The only downside to the book is the CD. It has plenty of examples and is very helpful but I think the book originally came with a cassette and the publisher simply dumped it to CD so the lessons don't directly correspond with a track, you sometimes have to fast forward to get where you want to be.

Book Review: Hal Leonard Guitar Method
The Hal Leonard Guitar Method is the book I started with, and probably the one a lot of people start with since it’s included in a lot of common beginner guitar packages. It’s a pretty complete book that starts you off with learning the basic notes string by string, then progresses to chords and scales. One thing I like about it is it emphasizes learning to read music, everything is presented in real musical notation, most lessons don’t even have tablature. On the one hand this is good because it forces you to read music but for a beginner it can be frustrating to constantly have to refer back to previous pages to find out how a certain note or chord is played.
The only thing I didn’t like about this book is there’s very little written instruction, it’s mostly sheet music and tabs. I would have liked a little more written encouragement and more detailed instructions on finger positions and strumming.
On the plus side, the included CDs are very good an they have a wide variety of styles, including a lot of well known songs. When I first decided I would try my hand at learning to play the guitar I wasn’t really sure I’d be able to stick with it so I decided not to spend too much on a guitar.á= I decided on the Rogue RA-100D, only $79 from Musician’s Friend.á= What kind of guitar can you get for well under $100?á= Let’s find out.
Features
Not much to report here, it’s a plain old dreadnaught style acoustic guitar.á= It came in a cardboard box, no bag, no picks, no instructions.á= The only accessory was a hex key for adjusting the truss rod.á= The included strings are supposed to be Martins but they didn’t sound so great.á= I replaced them with D’Addarrios and it was a huge improvement.á=
Quality:
Much better than I expected for the price.á= Everything was tight and well put together, the finish was nothing special but I didn’t see any flaws either.á= Frets seemed ok, no buzzing that I could detect.á= The tuners work well, it stays in tune without constant adjustments.á= The action was a little high, a slight adjustment of the truss rod made for a huge improvement.
Sound:
Again, much better than I expected.á= I’m sure a more expensive guitar would have a better sound but for a beginner this is more than fine.á= Surprisingly loud when you really lay into it, it also sounds good played softly.
Overall:
I have absolutely no complaints with this guitar.á= I’ve been playing it almost every day for 5 months and I still enjoy it.á= I’ll probably upgrade to a Seagull or something in the next few months but I’ll still keep the Rogue for playing alternate tunings.
This is the perfect guitar for someone who’s not sure if they’ll stick with it, or as a gift for a teenager just getting into playing.á= Musician’s Friend is a great place to buy one, they have excellent prices and very fast delivery.á=
