Hotel Yorba - Great beginner song!
Over at the terrific Lost Melodies blog there’s a great post about the White Stripes and some some of their videos. The highlight is Hotel Yorba, a simple, catchy little song that’s very easy to play. The video has so many closeups of Jack White’s fret hand that it’s practically an instructional video on how to play the song. Any beginning guitar player will immediately recognize our old friends the C, D, and G chords, proof that these simple, basic chords can form the basis for a modern song, albeit with a retro feel.
So now that we have the video showing us how to play, where can we get the chords? Olga.net is the easiest place to find the Hotel Yorba tab, as well as many more tabs by the White Stripes. Here’s the gist of it:

The Hal Leonard Guitar Method is the book I started with, and probably the one a lot of people start with since it’s included in a lot of common beginner guitar packages. It’s a pretty complete book that starts you off with learning the basic notes string by string, then progresses to chords and scales. One thing I like about it is it emphasizes learning to read music, everything is presented in real musical notation, most lessons don’t even have tablature. On the one hand this is good because it forces you to read music but for a beginner it can be frustrating to constantly have to refer back to previous pages to find out how a certain note or chord is played.
The only thing I didn’t like about this book is there’s very little written instruction, it’s mostly sheet music and tabs. I would have liked a little more written encouragement and more detailed instructions on finger positions and strumming.
On the plus side, the included CDs are very good an they have a wide variety of styles, including a lot of well known songs. The Fender Players Club
Here’s a good resource for guitarists of all levels. The Fender Player’s Club offers short lessons in various styles using well known songs complete with mp3s and PDF sheet music.  One of my favorite features is you can search the lessons by artist so you can learn to play like Buck Owens or Muddy Waters or Jaco Pastorius. Well, maybe not exactly like them but you can get a little insight into their style anyway.

One problem a lot of beginners have is playing along to a CD or mp3, we just can’t play fast enough to keep up.÷š Fortunately there are some excellent solution available that will slow down a song without changing the pitch.÷š Here are my favorites:
- Windows Media Player - If you have Windows you have this.÷š You can tell it to play slowly but it’s very basic, it only gives you one speed.÷š It’s free though, you can’t beat that.
- Audacity - An excellent open source audio editing program.÷š You can cut out parts of songs, slow them down, basically do anything you want.÷š Compared to WMP it’s very complicated but also very powerful
- The Amazing Slow Downer - This a fantastic piece of software, highly recommended!÷š You can change the playback speed to anything you want, change the key to match your instrument or the key you want to play in, you can have it just play parts of the song, like the chorus or the intro, it really does everything you need and it’s very easy to use.÷š It’s available for Mac or PC from Roni Music÷šfor $44.95.÷š You can download it for free and use the program with full functionality but it limits you to three minutes per song until you register.÷š It’s kind of pricey but worth it in my opinion, nothing else provides this level of functionality and ease of use.

Guitar Noise is my favorite site for the novice guitarist. The excellent beginner lessons simplify some popular songs and walk you step by step through learning to play. One of the easiest (and best sounding) is Three Marlenas, by The Wallflowers. A simple three chord structure is given some life with an interesting strumming pattern and some percussive strokes (basically just slapping the guitar). The three chords are really easy, even for a beginner, and it sounds just like the recording. The only difficult part for me was learning to integrate the percussive stroke in time and getting it to sound right.
 I’ve found that songs like this are an excellent way to learn chords. It’s very rewarding to gradually hear the song take shape and it’s more fun than just practicing chord changes. If you can sing it’s even better, nothing impresses non-musicians like playing something they recognize, no matter how simple the arrangement or sloppy the playing.

One of the most helpful things I’ve learned in the few short months I’ve been studying the guitar is that you absolutely must learn to stay in time. No matter how good you are at playing notes, it sounds like crap if you’re not in time. Conversely, you can get away with a poorly fingered chord if it’s in time with what you’re playing. The best tool for learning to play in time is of course a metronome, that’s what it was invented for. You can buy an electronic metronome for around 20 bucks but personally I use Zetronome, a free software metronome (Windows only!). This excellent little program does exactly what you want, provide a steady beat at any tempo you need. It also has some built in drum sounds so you can design your own rhythm track, which some people find less monotonous than a simple click track.  Personally I like the default setting, 4/4 time with an different tone on the first beat of each measure.
 Just practicing my scales and chord changes to a metronome has really improved my playing. It’s disheartening at first to realize just how slowly you have to play to keep it clean but gradually you find yourself increasing the tempo.Â

Ever notice how ear bleedingly bad the music is at guitar stores?á= I’m not even talking about Guitar Center, by far the worst offender.á= Yesterday I stopped by the excellent Guitar Trader for a book of country classics and I had to cut my visit short due to the horrific screeching.á= The store sound system was playing some kind of gravel voiced death metal that sounded like Satan taking an extremely painful bowel movement.á= On top of that there was some dudeá=wanking shredding on a demo guitar, the rapid high-pitched shrieking was unbearable.
á=I know, I know, they’re kids and I’m getting old but damn that stuff is obnoxious.á= I like hard rock, metal, punk, all kinds of loud music but there’s a limit.á= If it’s too loud you’re too old I guess.á= Maybe next time I need to go to the folky acoustic guitar shop.

When you’re first starting out on the guitar it’s hard enough to just play a few chords, let alone follow a tab and play a whole song. One way to get some positive reinforcement is to play chord progressions, sequences of 2 or more chords strung together in a pleasing fashion. For example, it’s very easy to play a simple 12 bar blues progression using only three very easy chords and actually sound like you’re playing a song.
