Chicchi is an 8 year old Japanese girl with ridiculous guitar chops. Check out the video of her jamming on Secret Agent Man with Nokie Edwards of The Ventures. I’ve been trying to learn this song myself and seeing a little girl play that well is either really inspirational or really depressing.

My favorite part of the video is Nokie just staring at her like he can’t believe what he’s seeing. Then when it’s his turn to solo he knows he can’t just play it straight so he pulls out a crazy solo.

Apache by The Shadows

I’ve always been a fan of 60’s instrumental surf music and one of the earliest and most influential instrumental acts was The Shadows. Their 1960 hit Apache was one of the first tunes to feature what would become the signature surf sound of dual guitars and lots of reverb. Sometimes referred to as a British version of The Ventures, The Shadows were a great band in their own right.

As cool as Apache sounds it’s actually quite easy to play. That is, the notes are not difficult. Making it sound just like The Shadows might be a bit more difficult. Ultimate Guitar has a number of different versions, this one is probably the easiest but I don’t think it’s 100% accurate.

Jimmie Rodgers

As I learn more about the guitar one of the things that amazes me is how some of the simplest songs can have so much impact. The true master at making a simple song sound emotional was the great Jimmie Rodgers. The man basically invented modern country music and could be called the first true rock star. Tragically, he died young of tuberculosis, leaving behind over 100 recordings and a few short films like this one.

When learning the guitar I think it’s helpful to pick a style that you’d like to emulate and work towards it. Of course you can and should learn many different techniques but it’s very rewarding to learn a few tricks from a particular player. For me that player is Jimmie Rodgers. Watching this film clip you can see that what he’s playing isn’t that difficult but it sounds great and the songs sound fun to sing, even if you can’t yodel.

Year of the Blues

Blind Blake 2003 was the “official” Year of the Blues but fortunately the website associated with the celebration lives on. Check out YearOfTheBlues.org for some fantastic old recordings from legends like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Mississippi John Hurt, Charley Patton, Stevie Ray Vaughn and many others. You can also listen to the complete 13 episode run of The Blues, a terrific radio series that documents the history of the blues. You might want to download and save all the great material at this site since they only promised it would be available through 2004.

The Clash

Damn, was this really 26 years ago?á= The excellent Bedazzled has video of The Clash appearing on ABC’s short-lived answer to SNL, Fridays.á= I actually liked this show when I was a kid, I fell for the hype that it was hipper than SNL, which was going through the first of many sucky periods at the time.á=á= Plus Fridays had Michael Richards, Larry David and that babe Melanie Chartoff.
Anyway, this is what rock and roll is all about.á= I never had the chance to see The Clash live, in fact the only Clash song I’ve ever heard performed live was when I saw The Strokes play Clampdown.á= And yes it was as bad as it sounds.á= As for why I was at a Strokes concert, the less said about that the better.á= Fortunately they play Clampdown in this video, as well as London Calling, Guns of Brixton and Train in Vain.á= For a lot of people I think The Clash are only known by the video for Rock the Casbah but this performance gives a hint of how powerful they were at the top of their game.
