Review: Martin 000X1 Acoustic Guitar

I recently made the decision that it was time to upgrade my guitar. After a year of playing my trusty $79 Rogue 100-D I finally felt justified in purchasing a “real” guitar. I settled on the Martin 000X1, here’s my review.

The Martin X Series combines advanced composite materials in the neck, sides and back along with solid Sitka spruce top and traditional Martin craftsmanship to provide true Martin sound and quality at an entry level price. While there are other solid top guitars for less money, I believe the Martin X series offers outstanding bang for the buck for a guitar novice.

Buying experience
After much research I decided the Martin 000X1 was the one for me but I couldn’t find one at any of the local shops so I was forced to head to Guitar Center. Let me just say that I really don’t like Guitar Center. My previous visits to GC have been on weekends when the store is full of teenage “shredders” who seem to love nothing better than high speed noodling for hours on end. If it’s too loud you’re too old and in my case I must be getting old because each time I’ve been to Guitar Center I leave in less than 5 minutes.

This time I went to Guitar Center on a Tuesday morning and it made a world of difference. I had the acoustic room to myself and the department manager was very helpful. After trying a few other guitars in the $500 price range he unboxed a 000X1 and I immediately fell in love with it. He gave me a $50 discount, didn’t try too hard to upsell me on strings or a case (which I already have) and I was out the door. So the lesson here is try to go to Guitar Center on a weekday to avoid the noodlers and shredders.

Appearance
The 000X1 is a no frills guitar. No fancy rosette, no binding work, no inlays. There’s not even any inlaid fret markers, Martin opted for painted dots along the upper edge of the neck. But don’t mistake plain for unattractive: this is a beautiful guitar with a flawless finish. The frets are absolutely perfect, the neck joint is rock solid and I haven’t been able to spot a single glue blob, discolored spot or anything out of place. The worst thing I can say about the appearance is the Martin sticker inside the body wasn’t glued down tightly. It was slightly curled up but once I pushed it down with a (capped) Sharpie it was fine. If you prefer understated perfection over flashy inlays you’ll love the 000X1.

One unexpected bonus is the guitar smells great. The very light finish (it is NOT unfinished, despite what you may read elsewhere) allows the natural smell of the wood to escape and it really adds to the experience.

The neck is made of Stratabond, a multi-layered plywood product widely used to make gun stocks. It looks great and should prove to be very durable. The sides and back are made of a high pressure laminate that looks just like wood yet should prove to be more stable under changing weather conditions. The solid spruce top is typical Martin perfection, the aforementioned light finish allows the beauty of the wood to shine through.

The overall impression is of a precisely engineered piece of lightweight craftmanship. It feels sturdy yet delicate, light yet solid.

Sound
I’m no expert but to me it sounds great, better than anything I tried in it’s price range. The 000 auditorium size means it has less bass than the dreadnaught style and as a result it’s not quite as loud but the notes ring clear and chords sound wonderful. I lack the musical vocabulary to truly describe it but trust me, it sounds great. I’ll post some sound samples soon.

Playability
The jump from a $79 Rogue to a Martin is truly amazing. It’s like going from a 1984 Dodge to a 2006 Audi. The guitar was set up perfectly out of the box. I know enough to check intonation at the 12th fret and each string was perfectly in tune. The action was low, I feared it would be too low but as long as my left hand technique is good there’s no buzz at all. The neck feels very fast, I’ve noticed a definite increase in my ability to move around the fretboard. The low action means I don’t have to press as hard, leading to a more relaxed left hand and shoulder. A more expensive guitar won’t make you a better player but in my case it definitely makes me sound a little better.

Conclusion
Purchasing the Martin 000X1 is the best decision I ever made. $500 is a small price to pay for something that will last for many years (with a lifetime warranty) of daily use. In fact it’s probably the nicest thing I own and has already reached prized possesion status. If my house catches fire it’s the first thing I’m going back for, and that includes the cats, my computer and my HD TV!

Slow down and learn!

One problem a lot of beginners have is playing along to a CD or mp3, we just can’t play fast enough to keep up.÷š Fortunately there are some excellent solution available that will slow down a song without changing the pitch.÷š Here are my favorites:

  • Windows Media Player - If you have Windows you have this.÷š You can tell it to play slowly but it’s very basic, it only gives you one speed.÷š It’s free though, you can’t beat that.
  • Audacity - An excellent open source audio editing program.÷š You can cut out parts of songs, slow them down, basically do anything you want.÷š Compared to WMP it’s very complicated but also very powerful
  • The Amazing Slow Downer - This a fantastic piece of software, highly recommended!÷š You can change the playback speed to anything you want, change the key to match your instrument or the key you want to play in, you can have it just play parts of the song, like the chorus or the intro, it really does everything you need and it’s very easy to use.÷š It’s available for Mac or PC from Roni Music÷šfor $44.95.÷š You can download it for free and use the program with full functionality but it limits you to three minutes per song until you register.÷š It’s kind of pricey but worth it in my opinion, nothing else provides this level of functionality and ease of use.

Guitar String Tips

One of the initial stumbling blocks with learning guitar is changing the strings.  It’s really not difficult but for a complete novice it can be a little intimidating, especially if you have an expensive guitar.  There are a number of excellent tutorials on the web so I won’t go over the details here but I thought I’d pass along my top 10 guitar string tips.

1.  Get a peg winder!  It really does speed up the process when winding the new strings.  Just make sure you stop when you’re getting close to being in tune, it doesn’t take much to break a string.

2.  Get a good pair of wire cutters.  Ratty strings hanging off the tuning pegs may look cool if you’re a rocker but most of us don’t want those sharp ends poking our fingers or damaging our guitar case.

3.  Make sure you leave enough slack at the end to wind around the peg a couple of times.  If you don’t the string will keep sliding out of tune and you’ll have to crank it back up, usually breaking the string in the process.

4.  Always keep an extra set of strings on hand.  I hate breaking a string when the guitar stores are closed!

5.  Most guitar stores will sell a single E string, no need to buy a whole set if you just break one.

6.  Spend a little extra for a good brand.  Why buy some no-name set of strings for $4 when you can get Ernie Ball or D’addario strings for $6?  You really can hear the difference and the good brands usually last longer too.

7.  The flip side of that is don’t be afraid to try different brands.  Each guitar reacts differently to each brand of string.  My cheapo Rogue sounds great with D’addarios, not so great with Elixirs.

8.  Once you find a brand you like, buy them in bulk!  You can usually save a little money if you buy them in a 3 pack or even 12 packs.

9.  Try different size strings.  Even a slight change in size can have a profound impact on tone and playability.  Since I’m a novice I generally like thinner strings, they seem to be a little easier to play even if they don’t sound quite as good as a heavier gauge.

10.  If steel strings hurt your fingers too much you may want to switch to nylon until you build up some callouses.  Personally I just toughed it out but that initial pain can be a real detriment to learning.

Rogue RA-100D Acoustic Guitar When I first decided I would try my hand at learning to play the guitar I wasn’t really sure I’d be able to stick with it so I decided not to spend too much on a guitar.á= I decided on the Rogue RA-100D, only $79 from Musician’s Friend.á= What kind of guitar can you get for well under $100?á= Let’s find out.

Features
Not much to report here, it’s a plain old dreadnaught style acoustic guitar.á= It came in a cardboard box, no bag, no picks, no instructions.á= The only accessory was a hex key for adjusting the truss rod.á= The included strings are supposed to be Martins but they didn’t sound so great.á= I replaced them with D’Addarrios and it was a huge improvement.á=

Quality:
Much better than I expected for the price.á= Everything was tight and well put together, the finish was nothing special but I didn’t see any flaws either.á= Frets seemed ok, no buzzing that I could detect.á= The tuners work well, it stays in tune without constant adjustments.á= The action was a little high, a slight adjustment of the truss rod made for a huge improvement.

Sound:
Again, much better than I expected.á= I’m sure a more expensive guitar would have a better sound but for a beginner this is more than fine.á= Surprisingly loud when you really lay into it, it also sounds good played softly.

Overall:
I have absolutely no complaints with this guitar.á= I’ve been playing it almost every day for 5 months and I still enjoy it.á= I’ll probably upgrade to a Seagull or something in the next few months but I’ll still keep the Rogue for playing alternate tunings.

This is the perfect guitar for someone who’s not sure if they’ll stick with it, or as a gift for a teenager just getting into playing.á= Musician’s Friend is a great place to buy one, they have excellent prices and very fast delivery.á=

When I bought my first electric guitar from a local shop they threw in some cheapo picks with the store logo on them so I gave them a try.÷š Even at my beginner skill level I could tell they were complete crap.÷š Thin and flimsy with a smooth surface that was hard to hold on to, it was obvious I needed something better.÷š I went looking for picks and discovered there’s a lot more to guitar picks than you might think.÷š One thing that appealed to me was a thicker pick, since it should be easier to hold on to.÷š With that in mind÷šI ordered some 2mm Dunlop Gator picks÷šfrom Musician’s Friend.÷š Definitely a huge difference, these picks are great for practicing scales, very easy to hold and the extra thickness gives a real mellow sound.

I found they weren’t so great for strumming chords, they just don’t flex enough.÷š I picked up a handful of basic medium thickness Fender picks from a local shop and they fit the bill nicely.÷š Good for strumming and single notes but kind of blah looking and a little too slick to keep a good grip.

÷šLooking around the internet it seems there’s a wide variety of unique picks out there.÷š I’ll be trying them out in the near future and posting my thoughts here.
