Why the bad music at guitar stores?
Ever notice how ear bleedingly bad the music is at guitar stores?á= I’m not even talking about Guitar Center, by far the worst offender.á= Yesterday I stopped by the excellent Guitar Trader for a book of country classics and I had to cut my visit short due to the horrific screeching.á= The store sound system was playing some kind of gravel voiced death metal that sounded like Satan taking an extremely painful bowel movement.á= On top of that there was some dudeá=wanking shredding on a demo guitar, the rapid high-pitched shrieking was unbearable.
á=I know, I know, they’re kids and I’m getting old but damn that stuff is obnoxious.á= I like hard rock, metal, punk, all kinds of loud music but there’s a limit.á= If it’s too loud you’re too old I guess.á= Maybe next time I need to go to the folky acoustic guitar shop.

When you’re first starting out on the guitar it’s hard enough to just play a few chords, let alone follow a tab and play a whole song. One way to get some positive reinforcement is to play chord progressions, sequences of 2 or more chords strung together in a pleasing fashion. For example, it’s very easy to play a simple 12 bar blues progression using only three very easy chords and actually sound like you’re playing a song.
