Review: Elixir Strings
I recently saw an ad in a guitar magazine for Elixir strings, they’re giving away a free t-shirt with the purchase of two packs of strings. Since I’m all about the freebies, and I needed new strings anyway, I ran right out an bought a couple of packs from my local guitar shop.
If you’re not familiar with Elixir strings, they’re a bit different from your average guitar strings in that they’re coated with some kind of space age polymer or something. They cost a lot more, I paid $13.50 a pack, as oposed to about 4 or 5 bucks for normal strings. Are they worth the extra money? Well I can report that they make my $79 Rogue RA-100D sound much better. Elixir claims they last a lot longer than uncoated strings so in the long run you’ll actually save money. I just put them on so I’ll have to wait and see on that one. The other benefit is the coating makes slides a little easier and is easier on the fingers overall, so I would definitely recommend them for a beginner.
I previously used D’addarrio strings and was very happy with them. On my last change I went with Martin strings, just to see if I liked them and I was very disappointed. They sounded like crap on my crappy guitar and were very rough on my fingers. I was actually going to change back to D’addarios until I saw that ad so kudos to the Elixir marketing department!
If you have a cheap beginner guitar like me, one of the easiest and cheapest ways to improve the tone is to replace your strings. A pleasant tone is important, even if no one else hears you play, because if you like the way your guitar sounds you’re going to play it more often. Hey, I should check those out. I have seen them in the stores but never tried them.
I have a crappy Yamaha acoustic guitar. It used to be good but has deteriorated over the years. Maybe putting some of these on there will up the sound quality a bit.

You’ve just made me realise that I’ve been playing guitar for 14 years and have never (literally - not once) played anything other than Ernie Ball Slinkies, usually ‘Hybrids’. That’s a pretty good indication of just how much I hate changing my strings. The idea of putting something different on a guitar, and then maybe not liking it and having to restring it *again*, fills me with dread.
Good for you that you’re more open to experimenting than I!

as a professional since 30 years, i have tried all kinds of strings. I have used Elixers on my Washburn acoustic maybe 5-6 times, and have the same complaint every time. tuning is not good (I use Martin or Ernie Ball, and have no prob with either) and breakage is fast on D, G, and A strings, strangely enough not on the High E or B…. I do play hard rhythm, and bend a lot in solos, to be fair, but do flatpicking and fingerpicking as well, and the breakage is noticeably sooner than with other much cheaper strings. And it seems impossible to replace broken strings, so i must replace with a single from another Brand, and - surprise, surprise - more tuning problems. I live in Germany, maybe singles are available stateside, I dont know.
