Review: Elixir Strings
I recently saw an ad in a guitar magazine for Elixir strings, they’re giving away a free t-shirt with the purchase of two packs of strings. Since I’m all about the freebies, and I needed new strings anyway, I ran right out an bought a couple of packs from my local guitar shop.
If you’re not familiar with Elixir strings, they’re a bit different from your average guitar strings in that they’re coated with some kind of space age polymer or something. They cost a lot more, I paid $13.50 a pack, as oposed to about 4 or 5 bucks for normal strings. Are they worth the extra money? Well I can report that they make my $79 Rogue RA-100D sound much better. Elixir claims they last a lot longer than uncoated strings so in the long run you’ll actually save money. I just put them on so I’ll have to wait and see on that one. The other benefit is the coating makes slides a little easier and is easier on the fingers overall, so I would definitely recommend them for a beginner.
I previously used D’addarrio strings and was very happy with them. On my last change I went with Martin strings, just to see if I liked them and I was very disappointed. They sounded like crap on my crappy guitar and were very rough on my fingers. I was actually going to change back to D’addarios until I saw that ad so kudos to the Elixir marketing department!
If you have a cheap beginner guitar like me, one of the easiest and cheapest ways to improve the tone is to replace your strings. A pleasant tone is important, even if no one else hears you play, because if you like the way your guitar sounds you’re going to play it more often.
