Conquering finger pain

Sore fingers can be a real impediment to learning the guitar. Most people who’ve never tried to play don’t realize just how painful it is when you first start playing. In my case I could only play for a couple of minutes when I first started. I wasn’t able to play long enough to even learn the basic chord shapes or play a scale. This was incredibly disheartening, it seemed like an impossible task. But so many people play guitar without problems, how do they do it?

The answer, like everything else with the guitar, is practice and repetition. A lot of people will say to stop playing if you feel pain and in the case of joint pain or back pain I agree but if you stop playing when your fingers start hurting you’ll never get anywhere. Play til they hurt, then play until you can’t stand the pain. Then play a little more. Seriously, the more you play through it the faster you’ll build up the callouses on your fingertips. After a few weeks of this I could play for quite a long time and now several months down the road finger pain is no longer an issue.

So my advice to anyone who is just starting out is to keep at it, it absolutely does get better. This applies to everything, not just finger pain!

Thank you so much for writing about finger pain. My roomate and I just got an electric guitar this weekend. His skin is rather tough and he can fiddle with the guitar for hours and days at a time, while I cringe and whimper as soon as I start playing. I’ll be trying the “play until it hurts, then play a little more” thing. I was afraid it would come down to that
