When I bought my first electric guitar from a local shop they threw in some cheapo picks with the store logo on them so I gave them a try.÷š Even at my beginner skill level I could tell they were complete crap.÷š Thin and flimsy with a smooth surface that was hard to hold on to, it was obvious I needed something better.÷š I went looking for picks and discovered there’s a lot more to guitar picks than you might think.÷š One thing that appealed to me was a thicker pick, since it should be easier to hold on to.÷š With that in mind÷šI ordered some 2mm Dunlop Gator picks÷šfrom Musician’s Friend.÷š Definitely a huge difference, these picks are great for practicing scales, very easy to hold and the extra thickness gives a real mellow sound.
I found they weren’t so great for strumming chords, they just don’t flex enough.÷š I picked up a handful of basic medium thickness Fender picks from a local shop and they fit the bill nicely.÷š Good for strumming and single notes but kind of blah looking and a little too slick to keep a good grip.
÷šLooking around the internet it seems there’s a wide variety of unique picks out there.÷š I’ll be trying them out in the near future and posting my thoughts here.
